Over recent years, the rise in women’s soccer, especially in the United States, has been game-changing. The USWNT has been the most successful in World Cup history, with 4 titles to their name and the most recent one coming in 2019. Ever since Emma Hayes took over, the side looks to be favorites in every major tournament they play in, with the former Chelsea boss believing the USMNT manager could use similar principles to guide his side to success. 

Since taking over the Stars and Stripes job, Mauricio Pochettino has been under the watchful gaze of critics as he seeks to guide the men’s team to success. The pressure has only doubled since Haye’s side recently won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Speaking at the latest episode of ‘It’s Called Soccer’, Hayes believes that Pochettino’s squad has got what it takes!

“I think Poch is the perfect man to try and do that, but I actually think he can take some of the lessons that have been taken in my team, over a long period of time and apply it to the boys because, I think it’s an inspirational team for generations and one that, let’s hope at the end of the World Cup because I think it could be a game-changing moment for men’s football in America,” said Hayes.

If there’s inspiration to be found, the USWNT is the ideal candidate, with four World Cup titles to their name. In stark contrast, the USMNT have never made it past the cursed round of 16 since 2002, with their best-ever finish coming in 1930, when they placed third. While the men failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the women brought home the trophy in 2019.

Another key aspect is the improvement in the quality of the domestic leagues over the years. While the USWNT boasts a roster largely made up of NWSL players, the current men’s team features only 4 players from the MLS. With the right investments and improvements, MLS could play an important role in shaping the future soccer generation, one good enough to compete with their European club counterparts. 

Nations League: A must-win for Mauricio Pochettino

With Emma Hayes winning her first ever major tournament, Pochettino is expected to replicate the success. One positive factor is that the USMNT has won the CONCACAF Nations League since its inauguration in 2019/20. However, the major test ahead for Pochettino and the USMNT will be the 2026 World Cup, which is set to take place in North America.

While no one expects them to win the World Cup, fans will recall how Croatia made an unlikely run to the finals in 2018 and are hoping for a similar miracle on home soil. Leading the charge will likely be Christian Pulisic, who is currently in fine form for both club and country. With 2 years to prepare, Pochettino will be hoping to go down as a red, blue, and white legend.
