When NASCAR announced they’d be adding 25 new names to the 50 Greatest Drivers list for the 75th anniversary of the sport, a few names were no-brainers. Among those obvious new inductees was also Kyle Busch.

Over the course of his career, Busch has carved a unique place for himself in the sport as one of the all-time greatest drivers in terms of his achievements, and arguably the most talented racecar driver in American motorsports history. So with those achievements, with that talent, and with his self-awareness, Busch’s response to a question about his inclusion in that group, the 75 Greatest Drivers in NASCAR history, was pretty predictable.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the throwback weekend in Darlington, Busch was asked about his reaction to him being included in that list, whether he expected that or not.

“Yeah, I guess to answer ‘did I expect that’–yeah, I did,” he said.

“So it wasn’t necessarily going to be a surprise. But I feel like it’s a cool honor and a humbling one in that to be a part of that group, just with my past successes and all the people that have brought me to this point of my career.”

Busch admitted he was expecting to be counted in that league of drivers. He then turned his attention towards thanking the figures who helped him reach where he was in his career and legacy.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the very beginning of time, racing in Las Vegas in legend cars and late models, all the way through the ranks to get to the top,” he claimed. “And then all the great team members that I’ve worked with from HMS, JGR and now RCR. Obviously you take that as much as you can with the accolade and the things that you’ve done.”
