Home/College Football

Someone needs to find a cure for cancer because it is taking away some beautiful beings. It hasn’t even been that long since we last talked about Ben Herbstreit. Now, if you didn’t know, Ben Herbstreit is the good-est boy in college football. He was Kirk Herbstreit‘s pet labrador retriever and was there in almost every episode Kirk filmed for college football or the NFL. Much like Uga, almost every CFB fan knew who Ben was and how much he meant to Kirk and the world of college football. You know a funny thing? Ben Herbstreit became the first dog to get the title of “Chief Happiness Officer” back during the Rose Bowl 2024.

But then came November 7th. Kirk shared the news of Ben’s passing on his Instagram, and it broke the CFB world. It had only been 20 days, and we found Kirk reminiscing about Ben and the times they had spent together. “Not the same without our Ben, but the boys still love taking their walks every day. Favorite time of the day. Good effort today by the ballclub,” Kirk wrote in the caption of his post. The clip features Pete, Mitch, and Theo (Kirk’s 3 labradors).

“You did a good job,” Kirk mentioned in the clip as he petted the boys for behaving well during their walk. Ben’s sudden passing was something no one out there predicted. He was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma and had multiple surgeries as well.

The heartbreaking part is that after the surgery, nothing seemed to get better. Kirk had mentioned that Ben couldn’t even walk anymore because his back legs were paralyzed because of chemo infection. This also didn’t allow him to eat for 3 long days.

The gentle giant was only 10 years old when he passed away. Cancer spreading throughout his organs and body basically signalled a no-hope scenario for Kirk and every Ben fan out there. He is definitely in a much better spot now. However, this brings us to another sad passing that happened this week.

But this week has been hard for her. Back on Instagram, Kristen shared multiple pictures of her with her dog Gunnies. “I had to say goodbye to my first baby yesterday,” Kristen wrote in the caption of her post. Gunnies passed away after 14 long years of companionship.

He was everything to Kristen and from the pictures, we can tell that he was an amazing fur baby. Ben will have a friend in heaven, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to wish someone makes dogs and pets immortal.
