Terrence Shannon Jr.’s journey to the NBA was longer than most of the first-round picks, including a trying final year in college with an off-court issue that cast doubts over his pro career. Shannon was landed by the Wolves, a place that looked like an ideal fit for the Illinois guard. He started as a four-star rated prospect and committed to playing for Texas Tech. Playing for the Red Raiders in his freshman year, Shannon Jr. averaged 9.8 points and earned Big 12 Conference All-Freshman Team honors. In his sophomore season, he took his averages higher to 12.9 points and 1.4 assists per game, getting him into the All-Big 12 Third Team.

Terrence Shannon Jr. then declared for the 2021 NBA Draft while maintaining college eligibility but soon returned for his third season with the Raiders. A year later, he entered the NCAA transfer portal and committed to Illinois. However, as his 5th college year overall began, the youngster was suspended because of an off-court issue involving a shocking false rape accusation which was later cleared.

Shannon was impressive in his fifth year with averages of 23 points, 2.3 assists, and 4.0 rebounds, including a career-high 40-point outburst in the Big 10 tournament semifinals, which was enough to impress his future employers in the NBA!

In June 2024, the Illinois Fighting Illini announced their plan to raise his #0 jersey to the rafters at some point at the State Farm Center. To which, Terrence replied, “GRATEFUL” on X. The highlight every college player dreams of having on their resume!
