Amid all the talks of Aaron Rodgers leaving the New York Jets, it was about time he addressed the rumors. With the Jets seemingly out of the playoff picture, sitting on a 3-8 record, Rodgers’ future was bound to be questioned. And seeing all the changes that are happening around the club, the Jets may have believed he was next.
However, the veteran QB decided to address his future on Tuesday by joining The Pat McAfee Show. Well, he started by calling out those who suggested that Rodgers would like to play next season but for a different team, “As far as my future goes. I haven’t told anybody in my life that I want to play in 2025 and not on the Jets. So that’s 100 percent false.” That’s one rumor put to bed by Rodgers.
He then went on talking about his plans for the remainder of this season, “I’m going to wait and see what happens at the end of the season. And if they want me back, what happens with the offensive staff and, obviously, the GM at the time? They just fired Joe.” As for Rodgers, he knew what was coming for Joe Douglas when the Jets entered the bye week. While he often notices their owner, Woody Johnson, arriving in a helicopter to practice.

Rodgers revealed how he had a funny feeling about the Jets GM getting the sack, “I just knew something might be going down here, and I was like, Damn, I hope it’s not Joe.” His intuition ends up being true as Rodgers finds out about Joe’s sack on a flight to California. So what about Rodgers’ future now, having witnessed multiple changes happening around him? Well, it all depends on Woody Johnson. As per Rodgers, “There’s a lot of things out of my control when it comes to that. But I’ve really enjoyed my time in New York. I came here to win, so I’m not jumping off ship. I don’t even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be the first option.”
While Rodgers still ain’t ready to leave his chapter in New York, the Jets owner had some other plans at the beginning of this season.

Woody Johnson wanted to throw Aaron Rodgers under the bus
Although the Jets have nowhere to hide in a season that was do-or-die considering a 13-year hiatus from playoffs, they weren’t this bad at the start of their season. After losing to the Broncos at home 10-9, the Jets were 2-2 in the first 4 weeks. But Woody came up with a wild idea at that time. He wanted the Jets coaching staff to bench Rodgers and instead start Tyrod Taylor in his place. As per Johnson, Rodgers was holding the team back.
Well, then, Jets head coach Saleh didn’t fantasy the idea. He went on to start Rodgers the following week against the Vikings in London. And that proved to be costly as Rodgers threw three interceptions while the Jets lost 23-17. So Johnson went ahead and sacked Saleh instead, thereby sending him packing after just 5 games into the season. He didn’t even consult his GM, Joe Douglas, at that time while breaking his own 25-year record of not sacking a head coach mid-season.

After a few weeks, Douglas was also sacked while their OC Nathaniel Hackett was demoted from his position. But it still didn’t bring Johnson the results he would have wanted. The Jets now sit third in their division with slimmer hopes of making it to the playoffs. Although they aren’t mathematically out of the race, their fate is all but confirmed. So, it remains to be seen whether the Jets decide to bring back Rodgers next season. Or will his two-year chapter in New York tarnish the legacy he had in the NFL as a future Hall of Famer? Guess we will find out sooner as the Jets take on the Seahawks on Sunday.
