As LIV Golf pros enjoy the off-season, Lefty has invested this time in his latest collaboration, and no, it is not with Bryson DeChambeau. While the 2-time US Open winner tries to make a hole-in-one over his roof, Lefty played with Grant Horvat again. The duo headed for an 18-hole head-to-head match against each other.

And through seven holes, unfortunately, and hilariously, Mickelson was down by five strokes. As he was feeling pretty low and needed a bit of a boost, the 6-time major champion used his lifeline, his wife, Amy Mickelson, for a good and small pep talk. He shared with Horvat that he needed this pep talk, which was becoming more of a pattern these days. He called her up and told her that he wasn’t doing too well against Horvat; he needed 9 shots over the YouTuber so that Horvat would get a HyFlyers GC tattoo and this pep talk would help.

Amy Mickelson asked him, “Do you have the Tiger Slayer?” Lefty used this custom Odyssey putter to defeat Tiger Woods at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. But Mickelson didn’t have that in his bag, so maybe he was missing the putts because of that. Regardless, the LIV Golf pro’s wife cheered him over the call and excitedly said, “You’re legend; let’s go.”

And that was all Mickelson needed to hear—a little reassurance from his wife that he still got it—and then he went after Horvat. Even the content creator agreed that it is calming to hear one’s wife motivate them. But did Mickelson win and Horvat get his team’s tattoo? No one knows until Mickelson posts the second part on his YouTube channel. Well, if he loses it, the tattoo will be forgotten. And he may have to wear joggers again, as he did after he lost the first challenge to Horvat and made headlines for wearing the joggers on all days of the Open Championship.

But he may not, as Amy Mickelson is rooting for him. Nonetheless, it was not the first time that his wife came to his aid and helped him.

But he could have gotten disqualified too if the rule officials deemed it an advantage. This one move sent the golf world berserk on social media so much so that Mickelson told the USGA executive director Mike Davis that he was ready to withdraw.

Well, he didn’t have to do that, but on Sunday, as the 6-time major champion gave autographs, his wife told the media, “He’s a good man who had a bad moment.” She further explained that just as everyone makes mistakes at work, he did too, and not deliberately. It was uncharacteristic of him and she could understand the backlash if he did that often but it was once in a blue moon kind of situation.

So people understood better, and in just a few days the controversy was dropped. It seems not only Mickelson but the golf world also needed an Amy Mickelson pep talk, and it worked in the 54-year-old pro’s favor.

Amy and Phil have been each other’s pillars since their marriage. Remember when Mickelson dropped his schedule indefinitely when his wife was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 or how she supported him through his gambling addiction? Overall, they have been together for decades now, and their relationship will only grow stronger.
